Shifting (2008) is a 28-minute audio recording featuring commentary by eleven commuters in Los Angles and Iraq by Los Angeles based artist Elana Mann. Interspersed with field recordings such as the ethereal whistle of a subway train passing through an underground tunnel, we hear commentary from veteran Captain Dylan Alexander Mack describing his experiences of driving in Iraq. Mack’s account of his heightened state of awareness and observation while commuting contrasts with the experience of a commuter in Los Angeles describing her wandering spaced out gaze as she drives to work. Commentaries in
Shifting also reference gendered, racial and class-based landscapes of the commuter in Los Angeles as one commentator describes a parallel commuting world of public transit where working classes women of color travel to service jobs in the Westside homes of Brentwood and Bel Air and veterans journey to the VA Hospital.
